Decade, Haiti. September 2008
Tibo Jean Fritzner, 48, faces the camera in his flooded home in Decade in southeast Haiti. His house was damaged by Hurricane Gustav. During the hurricane season of 2008 Haiti was subjected to four destructive hurricanes in the space of twenty days. This increasing severity and quantity of hurricanes is one of the effects of climate change. “We were very scared when the hurricane came. It was very windy and there were corrugated iron sheets flapping noisily. There was so much noise – the wind, and people crying, people shouting and running in the street. Someone came to help my mother get away, and someone else helped me with the pigs and goats. So then we left the house and fled. We had no idea whether the house would still be there afterwards – we just saved ourselves. This is the highest the water has ever risen. I’ve never seen a flood like it.”

Toll Bar Village, South Yorkshire, UK. June 2007
Margaret Clegg is shocked as she surveys the floodwaters and the damage inside her home in Toll Bar village outside Doncaster. She had only recently put down a new floor in her kitchen, new carpets, installed new doors and purchased her new lounge suite. She owns her house and does have insurance cover. On the previous Monday she went to bed and woke up in the morning to find the water half way up her kitchen. 'I feel awful I could cry'. There is nothing I can do about it, I just have to carry on'. This was one of the communities flooded when a freak storm unleashed a deluge of rain on parts of northern England in which more than four inches of rain fell in 24 hours. The devastation was caused by extreme and unpredictable weather and it is this kind of freak event, which climate scientists have been predicting, will become more frequent as a consequence of global warming.

Marigot, Haiti. September 2008
Marie Miracle Andris aged 75 stands in front of her flooded house in Marigot in southeast Haiti. Her house was flooded and damaged by Hurricane Gustav. During the hurricane season of 2008 Haiti was subjected to four destructive hurricanes in the space of twenty days. This increasing severity and quantity of hurricanes is one of the effects of climate change, which scientists have been predicting. Haiti is extremely vulnerable to these hurricanes due to the uncontrolled deforestation of its mountains and hillsides for the production of charcoal. Hence the mountains do not hold rainwater resulting in widespread flooding. “I lost a lot of things. I had a table and a cupboard for crockery and I had a refrigerator. They were all destroyed when the tree fell. Now if you asked me for some water, I would have nothing to serve it in, because there’s nothing left.”

Igbogeni, Bayelsa State, Nigeria, November 2012
During September and October 2012, the city of Yenagoa and the rest of the state of Bayelsa suffered severe flooding. This was just one of the 14 states affected when Nigeria experienced its worst flooding in half a century. At least 363 people perished and more than two million people were displaced as a result of these floods which received minimal media coverage globally. Bayelsa and the neighboring state of Delta were said to the worst affected, and the flooding left around 120,000 people homeless across both states. Crops and agriculture, as well as homes, were also ruined. The rains and floods were so bad that the Governor, Seriaki Dickson, claimed that the state of Bayelsa had been completely cut off from the rest of the country. Many of those who suffered during complained of how unprepared local and national government was.

Carrie-Ann Garner and Danny Jones pose for a photograph as they try to sweep the last of the floodwater out of the house in Toll Bar village that Danny shares with his mother. Carrie Ann is a neighbour who was helping out. In the background the level that the floodwaters came up to is visible, as the wallpaper is peeled off up to that height. This was one of the communities flooded when a freak storm unleashed a deluge of rain on parts of northern England in which more than four inches of rain fell in 24 hours. The devastation was caused by extreme and unpredictable weather and it is this kind of freak event, which climate scientists have been predicting, will become more frequent as a consequence of global warming

Bindeshwar Sahni outside his flooded house in Pir-muhammadpur village on the banks of the river Ganda which was totally submerged by the recent flooding. Most people in this community are displaced and staying in a camp set up by the Muzaffarpur Development Agency a local partner of the charity Action Aid. This is one of many communities in the province of Bihar devastated by the worst floods in living memory which have submerged thousands of villages and huge swathes of farmland in northern India, Bangladesh and Nepal. In Bihar alone more than 515 people have perished and more than 16 million people have been affected. At least two million people have been displaced and are forced to live outdoors on higher ground. These floods were caused by the sort of extreme weather that scientists have been predicting will become more frequent as a result of global warming.

Decade Village, Haiti. September 2008
The house of Tibo Jean Fritzner in Decade in southeast Haiti is full of mud after being flooded and damaged by Hurricane Gustav. During the hurricane season of 2008 Haiti was subjected to four destructive hurricanes in the space of twenty days. This increasing severity and quantity of hurricanes is one of the effects of climate change. "We were very scared when the hurricane came. It was very windy and there were corrugated iron sheets flapping noisily. There was so much noise Ð the wind, and people crying, people shouting and running in the street. Someone came to help my mother get away, and someone else helped me with the pigs and goats. So then we left the house and fled. We had no idea whether the house would still be there afterwards - we just saved ourselves. This is the highest the water has ever risen. I've never seen a flood like it."

Drowning World: The Water Chapters

Thailand - Floods - Living with floodwaters
10 Nov 2011, Bangkok, Thailand
10 Nov 2011, Bangkok, Thailand
Samran Pannarat, Wanchai Palagawong, Tanee Yoo Suksawan (girl) and Tanicha Songbangjak pause to be photographed while walking through the chest high floodwaters in Amornchai Village, on the outskirts of Bangkok. This is the start of the huge tract of water which is encircling the city. The outer regions of Bangkok have endured rising floodwaters over the past two weeks as the floodwaters which have inundated large parts of the country move through towards the sea. Thailand is experiencing the worst flooding in over 50 years which has affected more than nine million people.
