BOOK LAUNCH AND PANEL
November 22, 2011 6.30 -8.30 pm

The James Gallery
The Graduate Center, CUNY, 365 Fifth Ave
between 34th & 35th.

Project director Gavin Jantjes (National Museum of Norway) and editor-in-chief Mario Pissarra (Africa South Arts Initiative, University of Cape Town) discuss the evolution of their groundbreaking four-volume survey, of South African art from a post-apartheid perspective. Dedicated to understanding South African art against the background of resistance and social change, this exciting new project prompts questions about the role of local production (researching, writing, publishing) in the context of the broader movement for a more inclusive, international art history that recognizes and celebrates South African contributions. Veronica Klipp (Wits University Press) introduces the evening. Gary van Wyk (Alma on Dobbin/Axis Gallery) moderates.

Co-sponsored by The James Gallery, Graduate Center CUNY, Axis Gallery, The Museum for African Art, and Alma on Dobbin
